Advocis Vancouver Survey Results

Earlier this year we reached out via survey to ask for your feedback on our local chapter in an effort to continue to build our connection and relationship with membership, and to understand what you like currently, what needs improvement or what you would like to see from Advocis Greater Vancouver.

The Board would like to thank all of you who took time to complete this survey. Overall, we have had some very positive feedback, but we know we are not perfect. As you know, the Board consists 100% of volunteers who, like you, are also industry professionals; these are individuals who take time out of their businesses to give back. As such, resources are limited and we encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering to reach out.  Through adding more people to the team, we hope to increase our ability to better support our members. To address as many of your responses as possible, we have summarized your main concerns.

Advocacy Updates and Highlights

A lot of Advocis’ work is behind the scenes, therefore not always front and centre for membership to see. For updates and information on government affairs and the advocacy work being done on your behalf, we encourage you to visit our national website, Advocis.ca, and click on the ‘Regulatory Affairs’ link.

Here you will find a summary of what Advocis does on your behalf, as well as alerts/bulletins, a grid of current/past issues, and the work that is currently being done.

You can also reach out to your local board any time, including our very knowledgeable Advocacy Chair, Dan Swanlund.

Strategies for Success Conference (SFSC), 2016

In 2015, we were very excited to present the first Strategies for Success Conference; this was coordinated by many of our fantastic members who volunteered countless hours to bring this “TED-Talks” style event together. In addition, we paired the SFSC with our National AGM which resulted in a fun filled week of education and fellowship.

SFSC 2015 was such a great successwe decided to bring it back for 2016.  The 2016 conference, while somewhat smaller with a more local focus, was an overall success with a focus to provide high quality speakers. We are currently looking for feedback on our 2016 series to help improve your experience for 2017. Please visit our website, advocisvancouver.ca, to provide feedback, industry ideas, potential speakers, etc. We hope to build off the successes of 2015 and 2016 to deliver and even better event for 2017.

B.C. Legislature Day

Our 2016 B.C. Legislature Day was another great success as over 70 Advocis members from across B.C. came out to Victoria on April 6 to meet with their respective MLAs (over 40!!).

Key issues were discussed such as the impact of removing embedded commissions, the direct value of advice that advisors provide clients, and the overall positive impact to them, their businesses, their families, and the B.C. economy.

You may not be politically involved (you don’t have to be!) or think that your voice doesn’t make a difference (it sure does!), but the fact is, the success we have had as an association over the last few years has made a very large impact and built some great and key relationships. MLAs recognize our concerns and the importance of our role in the lives of their constituents and British Columbians. Similar work is being done at a federal level.

We hope that those who made it this year will join us again and those who were unable to make it can come for 2017. In an effort to help make our voice as loud as possible, National provides 1 night hotel cost for those that register early enough, and our local Greater Vancouver chapter covers ferry costs on a first come, first served basis.

Costs, Events, Locations

Lastly, we would like to address your concerns around costs, events, and location of events. It is important for us to provide meaningful, interesting dialogue and fun events. However, being a not-for-profit organization with voluntary membership, it is equally important for us to balance costs of events appropriately.

We have made great strides to balance events between Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, Abbotsford, and elsewhere in an effort to provide accessibility for all of our Greater Vancouver members.

In addition, we strive to provide great speakers as well as fun and exciting fellowship events for peer-to-peer engagement and mentorship. Whether you have just joined the industry, or have been in the industry for 40+ years, we encourage everyone to attend and introduce yourself!

When we look at costs for Advocis and events, it is important to understand that they are split into: A) membership dues which go towards things like administration, as well as national advocacy and government affairs/relations and B) separate costs which are associated with the production of individual events put on by your local chapter.

To hold the events and meet your expectations, food, venues and speakers all come at a cost. This is reflected in the ticket/event prices and is representative of what is needed to cover costs for each respective event.  We are always looking for new event ideas, and fantastic speakers – if any come to mind, please reach out to us – we love to hear from you!

We appreciate your ongoing support and commitment to our industry, Advocis at the national level, as well as Advocis Greater Vancouver. We look forward to hearing from you, and working with and for you to build an even stronger chapter and association to continue to protect our clients, our businesses, and the communities we represent.
